Gahhh, my friends page is full of such wonderful stuff today, especially in [livejournal.com profile] amilliondays! Most of you are talking about t.v. and music and show, and you know I'll be talking about that a lot in coming weeks, but for now I'll blab more about gishwhes, because it's my favorite event of the year and it's still not over for me mentally (fegvep!! coming soon).

Gradually managing to catch up, on lj and everywhere else, after gishwhes! Our house wasn't quite the wreck it's been in past years; just some clutter, mostly, that cleaned up quick. One year there was food coloring on the bathroom walls and an entire tray full of gingerbread; at least it's not that bad this time around!

I promised in [livejournal.com profile] amilliondays that I'd post my gishwhes items from this year, but since it's Throwback Thursday, I figured I would post my items from past years, since that's certainly a thing that's made me happy in the past, and I'm not sure I was brave enough back then to post my items! It'll also serve as an introduction to this year's items inasmuch as maybe it'll show you why I'm so pleased with my growth as a video-maker, because my first year's videos ... pretty basic. I've learned a lot, thanks to gishwhes. It's the only time of year I make videos, and I have an absolute ball at it. I was a film major once. That dream seemed long dead, but for 15 seconds at a time for one week out of the year, I get to delve into it!

The item was: VIDEO. It turns out that jellyfish will be big winners in global warming. Create a PSA to help the humans prepare for a future with jellyfish overlords. 23 points

Fun with Windows Movie Maker, which it turns out isn't the virtually useless video editing program I thought it was! I only learned that this year. The transitions still aren't the best, but with enough creativity and experimentation, you can make them look pretty good. This was me just starting out using the program:

Jellyfish PSA:

VIDEO. Tweed Porn. Let's see it with an appropriate porn sound track played on a lone kazoo. (No nudity required.) 23 points

LOL--I like that no nudity is REQUIRED. Merely SUGGESTED, maybe? Were I to do it now, I'd do a lot more with the visuals. ... Then again, the dimly lit room, cruddy camerawork and close-up is rather suggestive of porn. Still, I adore this one, because we totally went for it, Patty's kazoo-porn-music is hilarious, and the whole team came up with ideas for the script, most especially SpringLea, queen of puns.

Don't make me get the lint roller!

VIDEO. Which is faster: a baby learning to crawl or a turtle? Let's see a race. 26 points

An otherwise almost completely uninvolved last-minute member of our team (who kind of seemed offended by the whole idea of gishwhes--it seemed like the person who talked her into joining hadn't actually told her what she was signing up for) happened to have a crawling-age baby, the guy on our team who has virtually every object you could ever want somewhere on his property happened to have a turtle (we named him on the spot so we could cheer him on in the race), so we managed to get this item! Toby, dude ... maybe you should have trained more.

Baby vs. Turtle Race

IMAGE. Gingerbread Villages are always so cute and quaint. Make a gingerbread village that shows urban blight: needle exchanges, prostitution, heavy police presence, etc. 97 points

Here's the source of all that food coloring and gingerbread! If you look closely, you can see all sorts of unsavory details ....

I'm loving all the [livejournal.com profile] amilliondays happy, people!! And seeing what used to float your boat/still does. <3
This quilt I'm making continually defies the laws of physics. I measured every part multiple times, yet no part matches up to any of the others, top, bottom, or batting. I washed it and dried it on high heat for over three hours, and it came out of the dryer nice and dry, only a couple of small wet spots! ... and is now uniformly wet again, somehow. I washed it while safety-pinned (before actually sewing and quilting it) in hopes the cotton batting, which is supposed to shrink significantly and was confusingly much larger than the package indicated, would shrink. It didn't--but the rest of it did! Though I've washed and dried those fabrics individually before, and none of them are supposed to shrink, regardless.

I really thought after I pieced the thing (which went surprisingly quickly and easily for such a large task) I was through the hard part, but no, the hard part is evidently just starting. I tell ya, every quilt and item of clothing is equally trying as every other item of like kind. If it doesn't come early, it'll come later.

In other news, I had a remarkably bewildering day on the internet, some amusing, some horrifying, but with a similar surreal vibe as the quilt re: physics. I'm still reeling.
The happiest of birthdays to the gal who's a big part of what keeps us going and having fun around here.

We've been talking a lot about music lately, specifically (early) '80s music and our shared love for it. I was there for it, she wasn't.

So I made this playlist for you, Milly. Imagine you and I and [livejournal.com profile] septembers_coda are all hanging around together sometime circa 1985 and it's a really, REALLY good day on MTV. This is what we would watch:

Or, if you'd rather watch it on youtube:

A few notes. )

I could literally talk for posts upon posts about each of these songs and everything they meant to me, then and now. So if anyone wants to start up a conversation in the comments on such subjects, by all means, do so! I'd love to hear anyone's memories of MTV or their favorite songs of the era or their favorite videos; anything.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MILLY_GAL! I hope you enjoy your gift.
Happy, happy birthday to the inestimable [livejournal.com profile] septembers_coda, mod extraordinaire of [livejournal.com profile] spn_bunker, best friend, and all-around wonderful human being. I'm so happy I got to go through life with you. <3 <3

Here is Sam, impatiently awaiting an invitation to your birthday party!

Now here are some special birthday pics and gifs I am sure you will enjoy under the cut. )

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
So, this band I'm completely obsessed with. Once upon a time, they had a very active bandom, lots of fanfic. There's a pair of brothers in the band, so they even have a -cest ship! But the most popular ship is between the singer and the guitarist (both straight and now married--to women), and they're so hot together, and it's SO GREAT because you don't have to invest in one of those expensive tin hats or read a whole lot into it (though just a bit of websurfing showed there are fans who still manage); they just put it all right out there for ya.
No need for subtext; straight-up text will do. )
If I could still write fanfic, I'd be writing me some Isaac/Scott/Derek RIGHT NOW. Bravo, guys. BRAVO.

This has been a rare non-SPN-related post. As you were.
Title: Position of Authority
Author: [livejournal.com profile] brightly_lit
Rating: R
Pairing: Dean/Cas
Characters: Dean, Cas, Sam
Genre: romance, angst
Word Count: 10,300
Summary: College professor Dean tries to convince himself his tender feelings for his student Cas are only as teacher and mentor, especially when he finds out Cas comes from a sheltered Amish background. But Sam's ornery machinations to get them together have more results than he even intended.

This was written as a pinch hit for spn_reversebang for remivel's prompt. Here is the link to her art masterpost. This is truly a collaborative effort, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] remivel's great art and prompt, and also due to the contributions [livejournal.com profile] septembers_coda made, not only betaing but also helping me write the latter half. (If it weren't for her, I doubt Dean and Cas would ever have made it to the bedroom, since porn is not my forte!) They deserve at least as much credit for this fic as I do. Hope you enjoy!

Ohhhkay, I got an ad at the top of the page for an "Asian beauties" site! Wonder what on EARTH made them think that would have anything to do with my all-SPN all-the-time journal?
Well ... all right, because I know there are a lot of people out there who are curious but afraid to get their hands on a copy, I guess it's time to break down and review (time to cover your eyes if you're prude--or if there are things about Misha you really don't want to know!)-- Misha's wife Vicki Vantoch's book "The Threesome Handbook," which I received quite unexpectedly from a fellow SPN/Misha fan for Christmas.

Cut for DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY. Actually, my review probably won't be very dirty, but the book is, including all 26 illustrations, one for every letter of the alphabet. Yes, really .... )
Ohhhhkay, let's just bring up a little something here: Dean tells Cas to unbutton his shirt? Has Dean ever unbuttoned his own shirt to go on a date? (Maybe a gold chain in the chest hair would add to the look ....) Does Dean really care so much about the amount of chest Cas may be showing? And ladies, do you rate the quality of your dates on how far his shirt is hanging open? (I have to say, the closer to his navel my date's shirt hung open, the closer I would be to kicking him to curb before even stepping out the door.) Does Dean really think Cas will have better luck getting laid if he shows a little skin?

Nah. That was just Dean getting Cas a little more naked while they're still alone in the car, in yet another Destiel bone (pun intended) thrown to the fans.

I've been watching the interactions closely, trying to figure out where all the steamy homoerotic vibes are coming from, and I've come to these conclusions:

1) Jarpad can make any scene steamy, no matter who he's acting with or what that person's relationship to him is supposed to be. The Christmas Cottage was pretty devoid of anything titillating, trust me on that, but the scene where he and his brother are talking in the dark in their room? Mmm .... (And I am NOT a Sam/Dean shipper.)

2) Jackles acts "affection" in a way that always comes off flirtatious. Always.

Sly-dog

3) Misha's a troll and adores the subversion of the status quo/gender roles, so any opportunity to make a scene more uncomfortable/homoerotic/inappropriate, etc., and he's SO THERE.

1 + 2 + 3 = the most semi-intentionally subtextually homoerotic show on t.v.

Unbutton

I will confess that Cas's vulnerable, baffled expression is EXACTLY what I picture in top!Dean Dean/Cas scenes, so thanks for that, guys! Thumbs up, nice shipping fodder, great subtext, all that jazz. May this show always be all the crazy things that make it unlike any other show ever in the history of the world.

Some of you have left me AMAZING comments and/or very nice posts that mentioned me, and I will respond soon! And THANK YOU!!!
Title: Inescapable
Author: [livejournal.com profile] brightly_lit
Rating: R for somewhat violent sex, bondage, dom/sub, language, violence, death
Genre: het, outsider pov, emotional h/c, comfort sex, angst
Pairing: Sam/OFC
Characters: Sam, Dean, OFC
Word Count: ~9,800
Spoilers: Takes place in the early second half of S8, after Sam has started the trials but before he's become to weak to fight effectively.
Summary: The tall guy she was supposed to lure to a hotel room and roofy seemed so sweet and innocent, such an easy mark, but he turns out to be something else entirely once she finds herself instead roofied and tied up in his bed--someone dangerous and inescapable ...

Despite the warnings, what you really need to look out for with this story is the emotional intensity--hopefully, it will make you cry (in a good way, of course). But the sex never gets too graphic or disturbing. It was a hard story to write, and it's a hard story to tag, because it doesn't fit into any of the usual categories.

"Seeing herself next to Sam, his goodness against her badness, her weakness ... maybe she wouldn’t ever be good like him, but she could be better. She could try."

He seemed like a nice boy, and such an easy play. )
Needless to say, there will be 9.03 spoilers in this post!

I was dreading 9.03. There were SOO many things I wanted it to be, and I was sure it would fall down on all of them, and instead ... it was everything I wanted and more! YAAAAAY!!!!!

SOO many situations ripe for Cas's ... Casness, for humor and tragedy and everything in between.

Plus, the difficulty of being human is one of my favorite Cas themes (as you might have noticed in my fic!), and they went deep into that in this ep--it was like a fanfic come true! (With even a not-so-subtle Destiel moment there at the end, "I always enjoy our ... time together, Dean." Yeah? Tell us more about this 'time together' that never happens onscreen, Cas ....) Great ideas, great acting, lots and lots of Misha. I am glad I had all the spoilers so I wasn't overly dismayed when April turned out to be evil and Cas was booted from the bunker. OH, CAS!!!!!

I also have to mention a little detail I haven't seen anyone else mention. So Cas is in the bathroom at the beginning, clearly unaware of the basics of how to take care of his body, as he squirts toothpaste into his mouth (... and eats it?!), but then he takes his toothbrush--which he CLEARLY DOES NOT KNOW IS USED FOR CLEANING ONE'S TEETH--into the bathroom stall with him to do ... what, exactly? When it comes to Cas, it's surely best not to ask. A most entertaining little detail. Reminds me of a mentally ... unusual guy (among many) at a job I once had helping people with mental disabilities, and his self-cleaning habits, but ... you probably don't want to know.
