Rewriting SPN ...

So, friends ... I started a community, rewrite_spn, for alternate endings, tangents, fix-its; any sort of fanwork or meta that goes in a direction canon doesn't. Here's the user info:


Is there an episode, arc, or entire season of SPN you wish had gone differently? Is there a character you wish hadn't died (or lived)? Did you have a great idea for the direction you were sure the show was going, and it just didn't go there?

Here's where you make your vision a reality. Let's face it, as great as SPN is, sometimes it doesn't live up to our expectations. Maybe you really COULD do a better job than the writers. Show us, and them, how it's done! Let this be your alternate reality where SPN can be all it can be ... reflecting your own vision of what the show is really all about. Isn't that what makes transformative works special? Show is just the inspiration, the starting point from which we can go off and explore any direction.

Fix-it fics are welcome, as are alternate endings, spoofs, minor or major deviations from any point in canon (whether they're otherwise canon-compliant or they go off in a completely new direction). Especially welcome are cool ideas you thought/wished the show was going to explore when it just ... didn't. Fanart and metas that fit the comm are also more than welcome! If you are able to make a fanvid that tells a different story than the ep/arc/season did, share it with us!


I've never started/modded a comm before. Needless to say, I have no idea what I'm doing. :-P Do any of you who have been mods before have any suggestions as to how to promote this thing? I'm starting here with y'all, because if all of YOUSE guys were there, I think it would be a really friendly, intelligent place to hang out and discuss the show, the directions it's gone, directions it could go, and where we maybe WISH it were going/had gone that it ain't/hain't. So ... I very much hope you'll consider joining, and please, for the love of god, feel free to post whatever you want there that might or might not quite fit the comm belongs there.

Also, I put way more into creating cool user icons for the comm than I kept for myself, and the idea of getting to use the comm's icons when I post is unaccountably appealing. (Can anybody use any of a comm's icons when posting to it? Maybe you'll like them, too!)

Seriously, any help would be appreciated, and if you have any ideas for the comm, post about 'em!

I am squeeing because as you know, there are things I want to fix!! I think there's a danger it could get too general (I mean, almost anything qualifies as "I wanted this to happen") unless you're pretty specific about what you're looking for.

I'm concerned about its being too general, too, but I'm hoping the concept of "rewriting" whatever we didn't like will focus it enough ...

It's a great idea. The more general, the better. You need to make an image link for the comm that links back to it, and a short, snappy description of some kind, so it can be pimped.

I don't personally subscribe to the "fic can do show better than show" school of thought, but I like divergent timeline fics, and I like the idea of this comm! /joins & watches

As far as promotion goes, I think it tends to work best if you advertise it in various fanworks comms (sometimes you can jut go for it, other times you have to ask the mods for permission to promo something), and offer people (like us! :DD) a way to easily promote it on our own journals, as well. If you'd like a template for a little advertisement banner+textbox that people can copy/paste from to promo on their journals, I can send you one!

Getting it on the newsletter might be helpful, too. I'm not actually sure how things GET on the newsletter, but I think they'll pick it up if you post a promo to one of the comms on their watchlist. Otherwise, I feel like people also comment to recent newsletters asking for things to be added? Not super sure on the protocol of that one. And there's also the spn_weirdnews newsletter, which might be interested, as well, though I think they mostly do rarepair shippy stuff, so idk.
