They ARE set early on. I love developmental psychology and imagining what kind of kids the Dean and Sam of today must have come from; it was one of the most satisfying parts of writing the fic.
It's true that many parents don't pay such close attention to their children's personalities, whereas here, John's paying attention, he just doesn't have the time, skill or energy to fix any of it.
