Cas puts the "sub" in "homoerotic subtext"

Ohhhhkay, let's just bring up a little something here: Dean tells Cas to unbutton his shirt? Has Dean ever unbuttoned his own shirt to go on a date? (Maybe a gold chain in the chest hair would add to the look ....) Does Dean really care so much about the amount of chest Cas may be showing? And ladies, do you rate the quality of your dates on how far his shirt is hanging open? (I have to say, the closer to his navel my date's shirt hung open, the closer I would be to kicking him to curb before even stepping out the door.) Does Dean really think Cas will have better luck getting laid if he shows a little skin?

Nah. That was just Dean getting Cas a little more naked while they're still alone in the car, in yet another Destiel bone (pun intended) thrown to the fans.

I've been watching the interactions closely, trying to figure out where all the steamy homoerotic vibes are coming from, and I've come to these conclusions:

1) Jarpad can make any scene steamy, no matter who he's acting with or what that person's relationship to him is supposed to be. The Christmas Cottage was pretty devoid of anything titillating, trust me on that, but the scene where he and his brother are talking in the dark in their room? Mmm .... (And I am NOT a Sam/Dean shipper.)

2) Jackles acts "affection" in a way that always comes off flirtatious. Always.

Sly-dog

3) Misha's a troll and adores the subversion of the status quo/gender roles, so any opportunity to make a scene more uncomfortable/homoerotic/inappropriate, etc., and he's SO THERE.

1 + 2 + 3 = the most semi-intentionally subtextually homoerotic show on t.v.

Unbutton

I will confess that Cas's vulnerable, baffled expression is EXACTLY what I picture in top!Dean Dean/Cas scenes, so thanks for that, guys! Thumbs up, nice shipping fodder, great subtext, all that jazz. May this show always be all the crazy things that make it unlike any other show ever in the history of the world.

Some of you have left me AMAZING comments and/or very nice posts that mentioned me, and I will respond soon! And THANK YOU!!!

On a slightly different topic - I'm going through the quotes (this ep is on tonight! YAY!) and Dean is mentioning his dates finish when he "runs out of ones".

… I think Cas needs to learn about human relationships from Sam. Just sayin'.

Yeeess, you are so right. I can't wait for you to see it! I'm betting you'll really like it.

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really excited. I also want to see Crowley, because I love Crowley. And I love watching Crowley flirt with his Moose. You know where Dean says to Abbadon he doesn't know if they should fight or make out? That's Crowley and Sam.

hee ... I never thought of it that way, but you're so right. You will see more evidence of your rightness tonight.

Oooh, do I get Cas/Crowley???!!! I looooove Crowley's comments about Sam in leather "putting the S-A-M into S&M." Love that crazy King of Hell.

Nope, just plenty of Crowley and Sam, including this gem:

Heh, talk about your abusive relationship. I like the fact that Sam is just "annoying, offensive, but whatever. Just a child have a tantrum."

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I adore his patient-teacher reaction. Then again, he's used to abuse from Dean, so ... ;-)

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Very true. I mean, even in his mind when Dean is a part of him he still beats the shit out of him. Crowley was probably a welcome change.

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Crowley seems like a kinder, gentler abuser, a little more mature, maybe .... ;-)

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, well, he has been around a long time.

Also, he seems to want to be the sub in their relationship. I don't think Dean would go for that. Big brother mandate, you know?

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Bwaha ha! SOOO true. Even if Dean secretly wanted it, he'd never admit to that.

Crowley's been around long enough to be good at it!

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. "I get all tingly when you take control like that Sammy." ;-)

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I still can't believe they put that line in there! That winking at the fans has been going on for THAT long!!

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah! Hell, Dean slaps Sam's arse in season ONE! The subtext has always been there. I love it, even on a non-shippy level. I think it's sweet, because it actually kind of shows how dysfunctional their relationship really is. They're far too close for normal brothers, and that's been a thread that has dictated their actions for so long.

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2013-11-18 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I love it, too. I always assumed it was the brother thing that squicked me out about Sam/Dean, but then like I said, Jared's character in Christmas Cottage with his brother was HOT, so maybe that's not it (or maybe I just buy Sam and Dean as brothers WAAAY more than I do those characters in Christmas Cottage). But, even if I ain't up for reading true Wincest, I think the subtext in the show is a ball, no matter who it's shipping ...

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? The subtext in this show is brilliant! It's like one big massive crazy orgy! There are so many undercurrents and so much going on.

I have never ever liked the incest thing, but something about Wincest I love. And it's awful, but I adore it.

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2013-11-19 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
See, now, I am fascinated by this--both why you think it's awful, and why it appeals to you, because EVERYONE loves it and I want to know why!

It IS one big crazy wonderful orgy, and all so much fun!! Orgy of love and humor and angst and plot and ideas and creativity and feels and ALL THE EVERYTHING.

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-19 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I love it a) because it's kind of wrong and taboo, but they're adults and it's kind of kinky b) because it some ways I think it's canon, because they are attached to each other emotionally, very strongly, so it's kind of incestuous even if they aren't having sex and c) because both actors are really fucking hot.

It's also really wrong because they're brothers, and because Dean practically raised Sam, so there's a real power imbalance there, particularly if their relationship stems in some way from childhood. Power over one another and the potential for their relationship to be abusive make me feel kind of wrong shipping them.

Yep, that's what I love about Supernatural - feel ALL THE THINGS!

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2013-11-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's such a good point about how it's incestuous even if they aren't having sex--that can't be denied. I love that kind of power play, but I guess I would feel like making it so explicit/sexual would take away from the intensity of the emotional power play rather than add to it, but JUDGING FROM THE VAST NUMBERS OF WINCEST FANS IN THIS FANDOM, apparently that's just me. :-p

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2013-11-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think adding the sexual part of it actually makes that power play kind of creepy.

But yeah, I think a lot of people mostly just think "two hot guys!" But yeah, I think some people probably think it adds to it.

Frankly the show does it better than fic 99.9% of the time.
