Right?? The fundamental Sam seems so strong and self-assured; it's just his life and family experiences that have finally worn him down so much. You hit on exactly one of the thoughts I had that inspired this fic: of how things might be different if the grooves they've worn in their habitual interactions were suddenly swept away, the fresh perspective that could give both of them.
