I know I keep pulling out quotes, but I think this one sort of gets at what you're talking about here, albeit from a slightly different angle. It's by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh:

"We’re all cruel, aren’t we? We’re all extreme in one way or another at times and that’s what drama, since the Greeks, has dealt with. I hope the overall view isn’t just that though, or I’ve failed in my writing. There have to be moments when you glimpse something decent, something life-affirming even in the most twisted character. And now that you've said it, I think you're exactly right about that whole demeanor. Calm compassion---mmmm, yes, I love it.

I think the introduction of the angels did shift the feel of the Show, just from...horror and darkness, to a different brand of horror and darkness. XD And given the effects its wrought on everyone to date, it's an even more dark and horrifying brand. ...Whoops? XP
