About my fic Wings
Jun. 19th, 2013 01:46 pmAfter five LONG entries in my Destiel series, I've built up a lot of thoughts I have on it and things I want to say, so that's what this entry is:
I just posted part 5 (!) of my Destiel romance series, which has now burgeoned to the length of a short novel, and I'm not out of ideas yet! It's not a popular series by any means, alas, but I just love it. I love the love between the characters--not just Dean and Cas, but the friendly and familial love between every character. Sometimes in my other stories, I delve into the great darkness that lies at the heart of part of the canon, but this series lingers a lot in that lightest, happiest part, especially between Sam and Dean. I love the idea of Sam and Dean finally getting to retire from hunting and live a happy, normal life. I love exploring how much Dean especially sucks at being normal, and his uncertainty whether he really wants to be. Cas has always been one of my favorite characters. Oddly enough, in my other fics, he often never appears at all or is cast in a fairly negative role (such as shifty!Cas from season 6); thus, my Destiel series is where I get to really delve into all his most delightful, humorous qualities.
In this fic particularly, but in this whole series, I get to explore the angel mythology and add my own ideas to it. I was, briefly, a religious studies major. Studying mysticism and religion has been a life-long fascination for me, which gets an outlet in this series. Writing this fic was especially satisfying, getting to address issues I had with the direction the show took with the angels as discussed in this post and write angels closer to the way I'd have liked to see them written, in my Michael character. I feel like it was kind of a cop-out on the part of the show's writers to make the angels (especially the first ones: Uriel and Zachariah, sometimes Raphael) such dicks. I really wanted to make Michael as much of a problem as he is on the show, but also sympathetic in his own way, where you could see where he was coming from, so that stuff was fun and satisfying to write.
As I mentioned in the notes to the story, I stay as canon as I can, considering this is an alternate universe. I understand some people's aversion to AUs--I thought at first that I wouldn't like them, either, but once I read a few, I found I liked them--just as long as the characters remain the same; when they don't, I can't understand why they didn't just write something original, since they went ahead and made up a new character for their story. Castiel, for instance, as a human man, would make a fascinating character, but I've seen him so often portrayed in AUs as very human and nothing like his character on the show, usually just a little wiser than others.
This is an AU in that the apocalypse was averted in season five differently from how it happened in canon and in that all the hunters are still alive, but otherwise, everything that ever happened on the show prior to that happened in this series (with the exception of how Dean and Cas meet and fall in love). "Wings," particularly, afforded me an opportunity to write some interesting parallels with things that happen in late season 5 and after, bringing things to some degree full circle with the show. I guess it's my opportunity to write Sam, Dean and Cas a happy ending we're unlikely to see on the series for years (or, realistically, knowing how the writers love to torture them, ever :-] ).
I write slash not because I "ship" these particular characters (slash between any of the characters could be fun), but because I LOVE LOVE LOVE writing (and reading) super romantic stuff and the only thing better than one wonderful guy to write about is two! I really love writing gen stuff, and the vast majority of my fics are (PG-13) gen, but when I crave to write no-holds-barred romance, I write another entry in this series.
I wanted to make each story able to stand alone, largely because when I see those "part 12 of 35" stories, my eyes cross. Each story in my Destiel series is quite different and has a different flavor from the others. The first is fairly fluffy; the second deliciously heart-wrenching; the third is dark and angsty (in the best way, I think); the fourth is a fun (and sometimes hilarious) wedding fic; and this latest fifth one has way more action than any of the others. Thus, I wanted anyone to be able to pick up anywhere and read whatever fic they wanted without being obligated to read all the others first. You know, maybe "Union" is exactly your cup of tea, and "Feathers" holds no interest for you. I didn't want that to stop anyone from reading them. However, five 'episodes' in, with the events of every preceeding installment coming to bear on what's next, I'm finding it harder and harder to "throw in explainers" so the reader knows what's going on. From here on out, people may just have to start reading in order.
Part 5 is actually an idea I had for the next part after the very first installment. But then I started working on part 2, and "Human" is what came out--also wrenching and more action-y than the other parts, like part 5, but completely different from part 5. After that, in terms of where Dean and Cas were in their relationship, "Union" was what had to come next, even though it's not exactly a "feel-good" fic. (I never cease to be amazed how some of my bleakest fics are occasionally among the most popular ... but then again, I like a bleak story now and again myself, as long as it's true to the reality of the situation/characters.) "One," describing their wedding, was the natural follow-up, so only now did I finally get to a point where the events of "Wings" could transpire, and the way it ended has left a lot of room for more possibilities for future fics in this series.
This story was also me taking an opportunity to explore the possibility of Dean having become Michael's vessel, which of course never happened on the show, but Jensen is such an incredible actor, and it was so fun seeing Jared act Lucifer, I can imagine it would have been awesome if Dean could have, at least briefly, become Michael's vessel. As horrifying as it was to see Sam acting like that, it would be so wildly out of character for Dean to act like Michael that it would have been quite a sight. One of my favorite parts of "Wings" is when all the hunters see Dean talking and acting so out of character as Michael, and imagining how odd that must have been for them. The whole Dean/Michael thing and the parallels between the two sets of brothers was a quite interesting idea the show came up with and never explored very deeply, so I wanted to explore it a little more myself in this fic.
And I got to smooth things over between Sam and Dean, too! Which was a bonus for me. A big motivation for me in writing this series is seeing how psychologically and emotionally damaged Dean, well, started off as, and has been all the more throughout the course of the series. In reality, Sam and Dean would be blubbering and rocking themselves in a dark room somewhere after everything they've been through, but the show pretends they could still act and function just fine. Thinking about how screwed up they would actually be by now, especially Dean, has always niggled at me, so I wrote this series in part to explore how Dean could finally be healed. It's happened gradually over the series, but Dean took great strides in this latest fic, particularly in what Dean was finally able to see in Sam that he couldn't have without his newly discovered powers.
So, anyway ... hopefully people are reading for more than just porn, because there's a lot more going on here! But you get your porn, too, so there's that. ;-)
Oh, and here they all are, in order, if you would like to read any and all:
Feathers

Date: 2013-06-22 12:46 am (UTC)I'd feel weird not writing, though--it's so good for me mentally, even physically--but the motivation seems to be dying in me. Maybe this is the powers that be telling me this is not the path for me. Well, what can you do? I feel like I'm going through a huge transitional phase right now. I guess I'll just see what happens. :-(

Date: 2013-06-23 05:50 am (UTC)I hope you're right that I'm not supposed to stop writing. I've been through transitional periods before in my life, but this is the first that feels like the rest of my life is going to be completely different from what's happened up 'til now. Love back to you, my friend.
