I think your portrayal of John was pretty close to what's been said in canon.
I'm glad, and it's hard to do! JDM played him more warmly than he was written, imo, and the way the boys describe him as the series goes on seems increasingly negative, so putting that all together into a cohesive character gets tricky ... Yet the more I think about it, the more realistic I think John's irrational behavior is. The poor guy was up against forces so much bigger than him, trying single-handedly to stop them, just to keep his kids safe. His world was crazy; he'd have to act a little crazy, too. ;-] Or somethin'
