So, I just started watching BBC's Sherlock (two episodes so far), and I mostly like it except ... is it always so sexist, or will that get better? I am a Cumberbatch fan, the production is excellent and the writing is pretty good, but I've never been a big Holmes fan, so the sexism might be a deal-breaker for me.

I'm in love with the show (and have been a Holmes fan since about age 5) but it certainly has Issues.

I was really hoping you'd comment, because I know we've bonded on the question of sexism in shows we love before (but certainly not sexism we love in shows!!). ;-)

Ah, Cumberbatch, *drool*--oops, I mean, what a talented actor, ahem. I really liked him in the latest Star Trek movie; that's the only place I've seen him before Sherlock, but just from what I've seen of him in Sherlock, I'm absolutely blown away; his acting is on another level entirely from most actors, which is a big part of why I want to keep watching the show, simply because his performance is so riveting. (And the fact that he's easy on the eyes doesn't hurt .... ;-) )

Yes, that is where we met!! Indeed I didn't read the Sherlock part then since I hadn't yet seen it, and I did now, and it sounds both better and worse than I was hoping, alas. Ah, well, I'll give the show a bit more of a chance. (Lovely drawing of Cumberbatch on that link, too!! :-) )

I have watched all the episodes several times and found them wonderful. The 4th one explains Sherlock's attitude well I think so keep going if you can. You have to remember that Sherlock is NOT NORMAL by any means and his attitude towards others is very nasty no matter their sex. Keep watching! :-)

Yeah, my concern is more the way the show portrays women than how Sherlock treats them--of course the secretary MUST be sleeping with her boss. Of course their landlady will act as a housekeeper for them. Of course Watson's date becomes the damsel in distress and is the one the bad guys want to kill even though threatening either Sherlock or Watson would better serve their purposes. I dunno. Maybe it's just a kind of sexism that really gets to me, because Supernatural's sexism doesn't bother me a bit most of the time! At least there are important, strong female characters on SPN, whereas in the Sherlock universe, so far at least, it's as if women are completely IRRELEVANT, and grr, that drives me crazy. But I'll take your advice and try it out at least through episode 4. :-) Thanks for your thoughts.

Yep, I agree with monteseverus. Sherlock is pretty nasty to everyone, regardless of sex. And yes, episode 4 does explain a lot. Sherlock's pretty good, I love the production and I love the cast, and I'm eagerly waiting for the third season. (And OMG, the SPN-Sherlock crossovers are EPIC) :D

I was already getting SPN-Sherlock crossover ideas after just two episodes, so I can believe it!! :-D

Okay, I'll hold out at least until the 4th episode and see what I think, but I think it's more the SHOW'S attitude toward women I'm not liking, which sucks. I could forgive the character, but the creators? Ugh.

What do you think of Martin Freeman? I thought he was amazing as Bilbo and in the first episode of Sherlock, but already I'm kind of losing the love ....

I loved Martin Freeman as Watson, basically because I find the cluelessness of the character kind of endearing :D Yes, I see what you mean by the show's attitude to women, but I feel like it's because the characters are created that way, there's the whole character filter thing going on...

From what I know about Holmes, with very few exceptions, he kind of hates everyone :\ Then again, I have only begun reading the stories, not watching the show.

Ah, the stories. See, yeah, I just never liked Sherlock Holmes, from the youngest age. I'd just be starting to feel like, "Okay, this is getting kind of fun!" and then here comes Moriarty, and suddenly it's all scary and I thought Sherlock was a real dick to his nice, devoted best friend, and ... yeah, just not my thing, I guess. I loved Guy Ritchie's movies, and I kept hearing great things about Sherlock, so I thought I'd give it a go, but I don't like sitting around getting pissed off by the thing I'm trying to enjoy, so we'll have to see. How are you liking the stories? I've never read them.

I've only skimmed. I bought a book filled with stories to read, but then I started writing for my Big Bang, and I haven't really had a chance to sit down and absorb myself in it as yet. I also loved the Sherlock movies. I admittedly am not much of a Cumberbatch fan, though I think he's a talented actor; it's more to do with me not having seen him act in more than snippets than me not liking him. Perhaps that'll change.

If you want a fun Sherlock thing to watch, there was this really cute cartoon called "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century." It was adorable and wonderful, and not scary even when Moriarty got involved, so I'd recommend that to you!
