Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing or trope. Try creating a different kind of fanwork. Or check out some types of fanworks that are new to you.
I used this as my excuse to spend a little time poking around in the Merlin fandom. Ever since I started watching it, I could tell it was ripe for shippers and I figured there must be fanfic galore. (I was right about that.) Turns out my vague shipping fantasies are way hotter than actually seeing it, bam, right there on the page in all its (unsubtle) glory. (I'm sure there would be fics more to my liking there if I looked hard enough, but that was the impression I got from what I saw.) Actually, their fandom looks like it may be bigger than ours?! And younger, and perhaps less discerning. For some reason, I'd started getting the idea that most fandoms were much alike, but checking another one out only renewed my realization that SPN fandom is special. Home sweet home!
