Fic: Troll

Title: Troll
Author: [livejournal.com profile] brightly_lit
Rating: PG
Genre: gen, casefic, humor
Characters: Sam, Dean, the thing they're hunting
Word Count: ~1000
Summary: Sam and Dean hunt a monster they never have before: a troll.

“Got it,” Sam said.

Dean looked up expectantly and tossed down his lore book, getting up.

“Able to regenerate even when hacked apart, able to eat anything, thus they have very strong digestive acid and sometimes vomit on their opponent as a form of attack,” Sam went on.

Dean made a face. “We have seen some really weird shit, but this one’s right up there.” He shook his head, remembering the poor victims, nice people just going about their lives. They’d been attacked out of nowhere by a monster who refused to be deterred by any normal means, escalating to that most offensive of offensive maneuvers. The one guy who hit back said the thing came to pieces at the first blow, but then it gathered up what was left of itself and scuttled away. “So what is it?”

He turned the laptop to face Dean. “A troll.”

Dean’s got an impish look. “Troll? Like, the douchebags that ruin everything for everyone on the internet?”

“They’re not really the only thing ruining the internet ...,” Sam said cryptically. Dean tried to figure out what he meant. Free Dr. Sexy episodes on YouTube weren’t ruining the internet. Lore on monsters was only beneficial, for Sam and Dean, anyway. Porn certainly wasn’t ruining the internet. Was there anything else on the internet?

Sam read a lot of news and stuff; he probably had some objection about the decline of human civilization, but Dean liked things a little uncivilized. Anyway, the world had been about to end as long as he’d been alive, so any evidence that humanity was still around at all was good news, as far as Dean was concerned. “But no,” Sam went on, “more like the creature in fantasy tales that lives under bridges ... or,” he said, reading more through the webpage, “in caves.”

“Like their mama’s basements?” Dean chortled, then waxed nostalgic. “Like in Lord of the Rings? Legolas all runs up the chain and jumps on its head, then shoots an arrow point blank .... So, what, big ugly pasty dude who’s ... into bondage?”

“Some of the lore says that, but there’s more that indicates they look like any other person, they’re just ‘unchristian.’ Probably refers to uncivilized strangers people considered savages.”

“... Like the douchebag in his mama’s basement. That’s a guy being unchristian if ever there was one.”

“Oh, but Wikipedia says they do have ‘some form of social organization.’”

“... Like the douchebag in his mama’s basement, douching it up with other trolls in some godforsaken chat room.”

“Well, I guess they don’t call them trolls for nothing,” Sam sighed, getting up and loading up his duffle.

“How do you kill ’em?”

“Fire.” He brandished a blow torch and threw it in the bag, and Dean tossed a lighter on top. “Although some lore says they turn to stone if they’re exposed to sunlight.”

“... Like the douche in his mama’s basement.”

They’d tracked the troll to a nice house in the suburbs with a manicured lawn and lamps on posts on either side of the walkway, which seemed weird, given that what led them there was a stench and a trail of filth and garbage the troll left in its wake: more vomit (ugh), and otherwise lots cans of Mountain Dew and empty junk food containers. Dean picked up a Corn Nuts wrapper by the very corner and dangled it for Sam’s perusal. Even the wrappers were sticky with cheese powder, grime, and other stuff Dean was determined not to identify. “They really will eat anything,” Dean growled.

They crept across the lawn and peered in the windows, bewildered to see a very nice middle-aged couple sitting down to a decidedly healthy-looking meal. “This is the place, right?” Dean asked, confused. In response, Sam picked up the remains of a very large discarded Flamin’ Cheetos bag right by the back door. “Guess it’s the place,” Dean agreed.

He kept trying to figure out how something like that could get past the couple at the dining table, or be living in their house without their knowledge, when Sam murmured, “Basement,” and nodded to a door that appeared to lead to the basement of the house from the outside. Its handle was crusted with filth.

Dean made another face. “These things are as bad as witches!” he hissed.

“Worse,” Sam said shortly.

After first wrapping a rag around the handle--they’d been spewed with foul substances by any number of monsters, but they sure as hell weren’t volunteering to come in contact with anything touched by that troll--they eased open the door and descended the steps. The filth increased in foulness and density the farther down the stairs they got, until they had to carefully watch each step lest they step in something that would take a pocket full of quarters to clean off their jeans. They could hear the thing cackling to itself from a dimly lit room at the base of the stairs. Dean held up a hand, and they paused to listen: “Yeah, bitch, how do ya like that?” It chortled. “Her head’s gonna fuckin’ explode when she reads that. That’ll teach her that women shouldn’t get on the internet ... unless they’re gonna be takin’ their clothes off for papa.”

Dean nudged the door open, to see a young pimply twenty-something guy typing in front of his computer screen while shoving more garbage in his mouth. His room was lined with the kind of crap that had led them to its lair. Also porn. Lots of porn. “Well, whaddya know?” Dean said. “Right, Sam? Just like I said.” He smacked Sam lightly. Sam seemed disappointingly unsurprised, all business, like after all the time he spent on the internet this was entirely what he’d expected after all. He handed Dean the lighter, and Dean lit up the blowtorch. “C’mon, Sammy. Let’s flame that troll.”

Trolls are the worst! m :)

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Undoubtedly. :-)

hee! :-D

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Aaaand this is what Sam and Dean should be doing, all the time. Screw the witches and demons and vamps - get them trolls!

… also, what are Sam's 'worse things on the internet'?

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
RIGHT?

Honestly, I kinda want to know what Sam's 'worse things on the internet' are, too--I just figured he'd be judicious and not want to blame JUST trolls. Trump, maybe?

And how the heck are you, gal? So good to see you/your icon ...

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2015-10-07 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of thought you might've meant Supernatural fan fiction, especially slash. Surely that would be the worst thing on the internet for Sam. Or, I don't know, maybe pictures of clowns.

I am chugging along, working on my thesis and teaching masters students whose work is not exactly up to masters standard (I'm marking essays at the moment, and ugh). How are you?! It has been so long since I've talked to so many people on here...

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-08 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, that would probably have been on the list, too! All of that.

I'm really good, actually! Seems like everything is different from a year ago, in mostly good ways, yay. How close are you to finishing your thesis?

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2015-10-08 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the final six months (I hope). Editing at the moment. Goddamn thesis still driving me nuts, but hey, I'm making progress.

It's nice to see you're still writing fic. I have so much trouble writing now, because everything is thesis.

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-08 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I can't really write fic anymore, either. (This is my first in forever.) I still like SPN, but not like I used to. I've moved on to other obsessions ... most of which don't have the kind of fanbase SPN has, alas, so even if I did write fic for them, it probably wouldn't have any readers, but I haven't been able to write anything at all for months. I wrote this fic in part to try to get the writing motor running again.

The world misses your lovely fic! But thesis is important. What's your plan after you've got your degree?

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2015-10-08 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of the same. I missed a lot of eps in the last two seasons. I still do love my SPN, and I've been writing some fics. I've kind of not been writing much at all that isn't the thesis.

I've also got some new interests. Like my icon - OMG Hellsing! What have you been fanning out on?

After my degree? I suppose a job - don't know if academia or an NGO. I think that'll take care of itself a bit more when I'm done. For now it's hard to see beyond this damn thing.

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-09 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hellsing, eh? Tell me more ...

I've watched Captain America: Winter Soldier some 15 times, and I all but never rewatch a movie. I was getting into Teen Wolf until it fell apart, but man, it was sooo good while it lasted.

And I'm finding myself getting really inspired by an awesome anime called Ping Pong: The Animation.

Ooh, excellent. What kind of job would most excite you to have? (What's NGO?) I don't know how you do the eternal school thing, man. Once I got my college degree, I was like, I ain't never going back to school again if I can possibly help it. Regular (non-school) life is so much more ... free, imo.

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2015-10-12 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hellsing is a Japanese anime about vampire hunters - but it's awesome because it's a Protestant organisation that works under the Queen of England. And they have rivals in a Catholic organisation called Iscariot, so there's this kind of religious war going on while they are both essentially doing the same thing. Apparently the story was inspired by the 1992 version of Dracula, with Gary Oldman in it I think. It's a manga, an anime TV series and anima OVAs.

So what's Ping Pong? I mean, I know what the sport is, but the anime? I'm trying to get into anime at the moment, because it's something I have seen bits of, and not paid much attention. I watched all of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the Supernatural Anime, but that's about it.

An NGO is a non-government organisation, basically not-for-profit companies. I don't really know where I'd like to work just yet, but I'd like to work with policy, maybe around vulnerable people and welfare.

Heh, I know, I'm looking forward to non-school freedom! I think fear of non-school freedom was what kept me as a student. Sounds weird, but it's a big scary world out there...

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-12 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hellsing sounds cool! I'll have to ask my anime buddy about it ...

I can get you into anime! I love anime!! You want recs, I'll give you recs. What kind of thing are you into?

Ping Pong is good just because it's such a well-made show, so effortlessly creative. The animation itself is pretty ugly, but very arty, and the story and voice acting and all are fantastic. It's about two childhood friends who both excel at ping pong in different ways (one of them is quite asperger's, which makes him an unusual and interesting character) and their paths to success. Gah, it's just so good!! It's all about the relationships, ambition or the lack of it, competition, overcoming your fears; it just feels very true to life in the interactions.

Ah yes, I know all about fear of the so-called "real world." My brother took ten years to get his Ph.D. because of it! I've met a bunch of people who are pretty straight-up about that fear and wanting to stay in school, but gah, it's so nice to go home from your job and just have your own life to live without worrying about homework or figuring out how to play to a teacher's particular demands, etc. So no, it doesn't sound weird! But I think you'll like being done with school. Plus, then you can find a job you actually really, truly like instead of having to take classes whether you like them or not. Not to mention, munny! I always liked working so much better than school because you're valued at work for doing good work rather than for how cool or socially capable or whatever you are. I thought of the "real world" after college as scary, too, but in retrospect, I think college was scarier. :-) I'm eager to see where you go in your life. <3

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2015-10-13 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Hellsing is gory and awesome. And it has Nazi vampires, because who doesn't love that?

Wow, Ping Pong sounds awesome! I'm currently going through the horror anime lists on YouTube (you know, "best horror animes ever") and I'm also thinking of checking out Attack on Titan and Black Butler. My local video store has an absolute stack of anime DVDs, that's where I hired Hellsing originally (then I bought the TV series on DVD and the OVAs off iTunes), and I'm going to go back and see what else they've got. I also want to check out Hell Girl.

I read a little manga now and then - I've been reading the Resident Evil manga, which is awesome. I've seen bits of anime here and there. NGE, as I said, and Perfect Blue, which is just amazing.

I'm so sick of being a student - I can't wait to get into the real world! Hopefully by February I'll have my thesis submitted and be ready to get a job. I've had work on and off, and I enjoy not having to worry about my job after hours. It's a nice change from always worrying about my thesis. I've been doing it 4 1/2 years now, no way in hell do I want it to go on for ten!!

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-17 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
The only one of those I've seen is (most of) Black Butler. That's some messed-up shit ... but in a fun way. There's also an incredibly hot guy who thinks he's a dog, so he's always going around naked and sitting on his haunches, scratching behind his ear, licking himself; it's QUITE amusing. :-D

Ooh, February is nice and soon--that'd be awesome! I'm rooting for you, wherever you go in life. <3

[identity profile] toratio.livejournal.com 2015-10-19 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I was watching Black Butler on the weekend. Holy crap I love it! And Grell, and his fucking chainsaw scythe! And Pluto, the naked man-dog. He's so funny. And Sebastian and his love of cats. It's just so brilliant.

[identity profile] milly-gal.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
*glomps* Hey bb! This was fabulous *slow hand clap* if we could just get them to hunt these evil foul loathsome creatures all the time, we'd be set!

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, there, sweetie!

YASS, HUNT THEM SAM AND DEAN!

Congrats on your new/old job!!

[identity profile] milly-gal.livejournal.com 2015-10-07 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks honey :D

So, a swing by visit or something more permanent?

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-07 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to make it permanent! :-)

*snort* love it!

although wondering what Sam's worse than trolls are....

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
hee .... I was just talking to someone else about this above. Things like the vapidity of Twitter and the horror of the current political situation (and how it plays out on the internet) and vicious comment-section battles even where trolls aren't present were kind of flashing through my brain when I wrote that part .... Glad you liked. <3

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
You're back!!!! \o/ \o/

This is awesome. Death to all trolls!!! XD

Aww, I feel so welcomed! <3 <3

[identity profile] anactoria.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! Wonderful (and accurate)!

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, honey! (Good to see you there! <3)

[identity profile] anactoria.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You too! Hope you're doing okay. <333

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-08 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, thank you. I just needed to take some time off and figure out where I am here and, well, everywhere in my life. A lot's changed. I really missed this place, though. It feels really good to be back. <3

[identity profile] indiachick.livejournal.com 2015-10-09 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII. <3

This fic was wonderful! "Like the douche in his mama's basement" and that whole conversation :D :D LOL, Dean. XD

[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com 2015-10-12 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you! I missed you. <3
