It's Throwback Thursday at [livejournal.com profile] amilliondays, where you post about something that USED to make you happy, even if you can't imagine ever being into it now! (Or even if you can.)

Here is mine:

HE-MAN AND SHE-RA. I used to watch both shows religiously every day when I got home from middle school. (Then, Voltron, but that's another post.) I even got my (much older) brother into them. She-Ra was probably the better show, but they were both all kinds of cheesy and ridiculous. (And imagine our delight when a live-action He-Man movie, starring Dolph Lundgren, came out not long later! Except it turned out to be really quite, uhhmmm ... S & M.)

I won't subject you to lots of pictures of He-Man (although please do yourself a favor and google "he-man cosplay" images); rather, I will share with you two videos, one a hilarious spoof video from a few years ago somebody made and put online of He-Man and friends singing a modern dance song:

And on what for me is a more poignant note, the full-length song from the pilot episode of She-Ra, a song which my brother hunted down on tape and got for me (not an easy feat, and he did it partly because he simply thought it was a great song), and which, years later, a friend in college was just as into (having gotten into it on his own, also being a big He-Man/She-Ra fan). It really is musically great, if you can get past all the silly sound effects and the Casiotone production:

I was younger than you, but I'd watch He-Man all over again. I liked the male and female characters, as well as how they interacted with one another & fought together, I liked the subtle notions of "another Earth" that were hinted at, and actually took a lot of the lessons to heart (including those shared by Orco). He-man was a hero to me, a good male role model, and set the stage for me liking characters like Thor and Nightcrawler. I also like all the cheese (which I understood even at a young age); imo a show doesn't have to be all slick or without a sense of humor about itself; long live Prince Adam breaking the 4th wall. Also, great voice acting in general.

Yeah, the voice acting really was extraordinary for the day. I agree--He-Man WAS a good role model--he was able to embody both the tough (but righteous) guy and the sensitive, more nerdy type in Adam. Ah, good ol' Orco--I actually never could tolerate him, but I loved Teela, Man-at-Arms, and especially the Sorceress.

I eagerly await your Voltron post. I never got home from school in time for He-Man.

I had to hurry from the bus to catch as much as I can; I still missed a few minutes, usually. I'll try to make sure to make the Voltron post! I'll have a lot to say about that one ....

There will be plenty more Throwback Thursdays to come at [livejournal.com profile] amilliondays, I figure, my dear.

You watched them too?? Right on, soul sista! Middle school was the WORST, so at least they gave me something not painful to look forward to for an hour right after school. I had to race to catch all of He-Man, too.

Jeff happened to be sitting behind me when I started the He-Man vid. We both cracked up! I don't know the show except vaguely, but it's still hilarious. Thanks!

Lol--glad you liked it! Unfamiliarity with the show doesn't make the video any less delightfully wtf, I figure.
