For Self-Rec Saturday, I shall talk about one of my gishwhes items! This, to me, was one of the more hilariously worded items this year:

The item was: "It’s a well-known fact that Pablo Picasso was a huge “Supernatural” fan. He painted portraits of Mark Sheppard, Jensen Ackles, Ruth Connell, Sam Smith, Richard Speight Jr., Matt Cohen, Jared Padalecki, Andrew Dabb, Rob Benedict, Misha Collins, Bob Singer, and many of the other cast and crew members. Sadly, until now, these great works have been lost to the world. Fortunately, your team has unearthed one of these priceless works."

Here's what I did for it:

My mom had a couple of Picassos on the wall when I was growing up. She claimed to like 'em, but tell you the truth, I've never been a fan. Still, it was something I've been exposed to all my life, and I was eager to explore his work and style a bit more.

I felt from the beginning that I would be painting Rob, and sure enough, a good pic of him came up on the Google, and that's what I ended up using. I did a lot of painting this year! Next time I'll show you my Bob Ross time-lapse painting.

Man, I love all the art projects gishwhes makes you do. Somewhere deep inside me, I secretly always wanted to try to paint like Picasso, just to try to figure out what was going on in the brain of the guy whose works haunted me as a kid, and to see if my childhood suspicion that with his big-color-block portraits he was just tired of working so hard to make grown-up art and wanted to see if he could make it easy and fun like when you're coloring as a kid (CONFIRMED), and as usual, gishwhes read these buried desires and interests and talked me into actually fulfilling them. Thanks, Misha! I LOVE YOU. (No, seriously, I love you.)

This is such an awesome portrait! I've never really had one opinion or another about Picasso, but I love this. <333 The yellow block of light on his forehead and the purple swirl of his forelock (if that's a term you can use for people in addition to horses, lol) especially. It just has such character! And even stylized, you can totally tell that it's him.

(I don't know what tag it would use, but this would be a cool art piece to share with [livejournal.com profile] spnspiration, if you were so inclined!)

I'LL USE THAT TERM FOR PEOPLE AS WELL AS HORSES.

I'm really glad you can tell that it's him. (Especially because making my paintings look like the people they're supposed to be of doesn't come easy to me. BUT WHEN I'M IMITATING PICASSO, IT DOES?!??)

Ooh, ooh, I'll go over there and share it right now! :-)

That's so awesome. I am grateful that this Picasso has two eyes and is not easily confused with a horse, guitar or windmill or some combination of all three. I find his work interesting but unquiet in a way that is hard to hack in much more than small exposures at a time. I like the time you took with even the background here.

I love this comment--hilarious and astute, sharing so many of my own feelings about Picasso. YES, unquiet, almost deliberately off-putting.

There are not a lot of gishwhes SPN Picasso portraits that come up when you Google it, but a few, and they are EXCELLENT ... but you can seldom tell who it is, so I'm especially gratified that you can in this case! ... although surely that's because this one has two eyes, even both on the same level and facing the same direction. :-P

Glad you enjoyed, bb.

I have told you how much I love this, even if not as much as all your original YOU-style paintings! (BTdubs, I DISAGREE that your you-style portraits don't look like who they are-- I guess you just said it doesn't come easily to you, which only you get to decide, :-) but the end product ALWAYS looks like the subject, and more importantly, has the SOUL.) <3 You nailed Picasso, but better IMO. (I'm not a Picasso fan either.) I love this painting, and I'm so glad you chose Rob, because I have newfound, tender love for the man, and I will be glad to have YOUR portrait of him on the wall once I get a suitable frame. <3

This is as good a place as any to tell you-- remember the bearded-glasses Picasso-Gishwhes portraits we couldn't identify? It's because we were only thinking of actors. I think they were supposed to be Bob Singer. :-D

Well, thank you very much, bb. They do have soul! But I think it's my soul I'm putting into them as much as the person I'm painting .... Anyway, I appreciate it. <3

I think I saw more Singers when I googled them--I think you're right!
